Here’s an email that landed in our mailbox today, written in response to one of the comments on the site. Cooper and I found it incredibly moving, in that it brought home both the sense of loss and of hope felt by people who lost their homes in New Orleans.
When I read your post it brought tears to my eyes just knowing a fellow St. Bernardian is doing okay, you have a HOME. That’s great news but it will never be the same without the Rocky and Carlos being five minutes away or the Meraux Food Store being only two minutes away. But we learn to adjust in this game we call LIFE and we move on. Now there may be another Greasy Spoon on your new corner which years from now we all will be talking about. I know what your going through with FEMA, I hear the same old story everyday also, We are reviewing your case Mr. Moreau nothing new to tell you. BE STRONG! We are doing it!
I am now in Baton Rouge and to give my daughter a sense of normalcy I have enrolled her in the New Chalmette High School. It’s all St. Bernard Schools together there and they are at least 1,000 students. She has been all smiles since she enrolled.
I pray for St. Bernard and everyone from there. I was there this past Saturday and sadly it hasn’t made much progress and will be a very very long time before we can go back and live a normal life there again. Head’s high and lets move on! Love all of you! Charles L. Moreau Jr.
PS: Meraux Food Store is also open for Business!
Charles, our hearts go out to you and all the residences of St. Bernard who are still finding their way after losing their homes.

Exactly right–I have visited Chalmette most years since 1983. Myself and a group of friends have come down to work mardi gras parades and we always stayed in Chalmette.
We never thought of staying anywhere else. We all enjoy the friendliness of Chalmations. We rented out a vacant business and set up our base of operations for selling toys and novelties at parades in the entire southeast Louisiana area.
Chalmette is the ‘jewel’ of the entire area. I have never felt to be so at home while away from home. I thing the first place I enjoyed a po’ boy was Meraux’s
across Paris Rd. from the old Jerry LaVie’s lounge. We frequented the entire
business community in Chalmette. It was better than going to such places as Las
    Vegas or Hawaii.
Rocky @ Carlos is the jewel of the jewel. When I walk in that place and while eating the fantastic food, I feel like nothing else exists. And I don’t think I everf enjoy paying for a meal more as when I hand Rocky $8.50 for a meal and a Barq’s root beer; and of course tip the server lady the change. I could go on forever, but let
me say in closing. Rocky @ Carlos should live on for as long as the Lord allows.

Rocky & Carlo’s is coming back! Frank Davis interviewed ‘em for Channel 4 and they’ve got sheetrock (for those not in NOLA, this is a rebuilding milestone celebrated with great enthusiasm, similar to, say, baby’s first steps, you take pictures, share ‘em with everyone who cares and even with some who don’t, and they are all happy for you).
