Over 400 fled to Pittsburgh from Katrina, and over 200 people ened up staying and find a home there. Families from Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas are now calling themselves Pittsburghers, maybe temporarily, maybe forever. And Pittsburgh is very lucky to have them.

Since moving to Pittsburgh, the former residents of the Gulf Coast have done something really unique, they formed an association, The Gulf Coast Connection.

Run by Lurline Cadogan, Ana Robinson and Laurel Turner, the Gulf Coast Connection offers the evacuees in this city a network, information and support. At a recent meeting, members shared information on job leads, programs for children and they even organized a weekend retreat for the members.

The needs of evacuees in Pittsburgh, like everywhere, continue. If you want to assist in any way, please read through the following comments to see where you can help. If you are an evacuee in Pittsburgh and are in need of items, please post as well. Our hope is that you will connect with each other. We have found, over and over again, that it is the one-on-one connections that go the longest way.

Please note: An incredible resource here in Pennsylvania for evacuees is Project Katrina. Visit this link for more information. Also, please see the comments below from Sharon Juli of Project Katrina. She shares very important information and great resources with us there.

If you have questions or comments, please contact us at cooper.and.emily@mac.com.

Donors: We have not vetted the people using our site to find goods, nor can we vouch for them. It’s critical that you speak with them to determine whether it’s a good match and decide whether you feel comfortable donating and sending the goods they requested to them. We strongly urge you not to accept an arrangement that doesn’t feel right. If you connect with an evacuee and you think for whatever reason it’s not a good match, tell them so. If appropriate, you can encourage them to use our website to look for other donations.

Evacuees and Hosts: We have not vetted the people offering donated goods on this site, nor can we vouch for them. We cannot guarantee that they will follow through on any particular donation that they’ve offered on the website. If you suspect that a donor is not coming through with a donation that they’ve offered, the best bet is to go back to the website and connect with another donor.

AGH INTEGRATED MEDICINE PROGRAM TO HOST FREE STRESS RELIEF PROGRAM FOR HURRICANE SURVIVORS

PITTSBURGH (November 21, 2005) – The Integrated Medicine Program at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) will be part of the effort to help hurricane survivors get their lives back on track.
The Program will host 12 free stress relief session, sponsored by Pittsburgh to hurricane survivors now residing in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh Shares is a cooperative of local alternative and complementary medicine practitioners dedicated to helping those affected by natural and man-made disasters. All sessions will run from 2 to 5 p.m. and will be offered on Sundays, Dec. 4 and 18, Jan. 8 and 22, and Feb. 5 and 19 (last 6 sessions TBA), in the Integrated Medicine Clinic, located in the Federal North Building on Federal Street, North Side.
“There has been more and more scientific evidence of the serious side effects of stress on the body, mind and spirit,” said Betsy Blazek-O’Neill, MD, medical director, AGH Integrated Medicine Program. “There is no doubt as to the high levels of stress experienced by those who have lost so much and who are so far away from home. Chronic levels of stress after suffering major losses can cause difficulty sleeping, irritability, difficulty relaxing, feeling melancholy, anger, depression and anxiousness. Chronic stress can make it difficult to adapt to new situations or places, and can even lead to physical health problems.”
Individual sessions will be offered that will consist of non-invasive stress relieving bodywork by volunteer alternative and complementary medicine practitioners. Stress relieving methods such as Massage, Chiropractic, Reiki, Cellular Expansion and Healing, Somatic Therapy, Cranio-sacral Therapy, Acupuncture and Healing Touch will be provided. Group sessions will include meditation and guided imagery, yoga and tai chi.
“We want to do all we can to help these people who suffered loss and hardship caused by the hurricane and who now call Pittsburgh home,” Dr. O’Neill said.
For more information or to schedule an appointment, call Pittsburgh SHARES at 1-888-550-3821.

    Hi-
Several of us at work have crocheted or knitted scarves, mittens, hats, what have you for our new Katrina Pittsburghers. Sorry about the cold weather here! It’s one part off the “Burgh you might not like (some of us don’t like it either). Email me and we’ll figure out how to get our handiwork to you.

  13. 13 Sharon B. Juli (contact me!)

Please know that your generous offers are being noted and are greatly appreciated. Also, understand that your kindness is recognized and efforts to match your gifts to those who have moved to Pittsburgh from the hurricane areas are underway. Many of the families do not have access to the internet and that is a barrier that we are trying to overcome.
I am currently woking with the individuals and families who have moved to Allegheny County from the hurricane areas. In meeting and talking to these courageous folks my team and I have learned of these needs:
    pre-paid cell phone service
    washers and dryers
    pre-paid bus/trolley transportation passes
    pre-paid gasoline cards
pre-paid auto service stations…snow tires, oil change, etc.
gift cards to local grocery stores
gift card to local retail stores

The chilren love the snow! They would like to have an opportunity to go ice skating. Also, Pittsburgh is a rich cultural town with museums, theaters, music, dance and special events. Gifts to support a social event would be greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you for your kindness.

  14. 14 Shezelle Jackson (contact me!)

    This message is from Shezelle:
Shezelle has 3 children ages 6, 8, 11. The children have been enjoying the winter in Pittsburgh and would love to try to ice skate at a local city park or at the rink outside of PPG Place.
Shezelle and her children, like so many others, came to Pittsburgh with little more an the clothes on their backs. Currently, they are living in a comfortable apartment and the children are adapting to their new school. They have some basic needs for furniture and lamps. For Christmas, they would like the usual dolls, board games, arts and crafts, and little boy toys for the 6 year old. In addition, toy boxes and a free standing clothes locker. Bicyles would be a great gift in the spring. The biggest and most desired item for Shezelle is a washing machine and dryer. The cost of going to a laundry center is very expensive.
Any gift is not too small.
Please call Shezelle at 1-504-220-1123 or e-mail sbjuli@hotmail.com

  39. 39 Shirl (contact me!)

I live in Pittsburgh, PA, and was in New Orleans in October saving animals. I am on a first response team for disaster rescue of animals.
I have “adopted” a firefighter that works in New Orleans and lived in the St. Bernard Parish..he lost his entire home and belongings while he was risking his life to save others during the hurricane.

He is single/engaged, so he is not eligible for any assistance from Habitat for Humanity, Fema, Red Cross, etc. He tells me the horror stories that are happening there. I have been trying to get donated building supplies for him to rebuild his home. He is doing it himself with assistance from friends and family. He has gutted the house, and is ready to rewire and plumb..and ready for windows. I have tried to get donations from Home improvement stores, window manufacturers, Romex wire manufacturers and suppliers, you name it. There has been no offer, and I have been sending out letters since December.
I wrote to Harry Connick, Jr’s agent asking for “leftover” supplies from Habitat for Humanity,..nothing. I wrote to Oprah, Ellen Degeneres, Montel Williams…nothing.
I am willing to pay for shipping of supplies, if needed. Anyone out there with wire, windows, electical boxes, etc? Thanks, Shirl

  40. 40 Michelle (contact me!)

I am a school teacher in Maryland but a resident of Pennsylvania. Every month I have my first grade students participate in a community project. Recently, we have collected about ten brand new and gently used backpacks that are filled with school supplies for any child who is in need of them for either the remainder of this year or the following school year. My son and I have relocated to Pittsbugh area from Louisiana due to Hurricane Katrina. Thanks to so many people here, they have helped us very much. Everyone has welcomed us with open arms and make us feel at home here. I do need to ask for help with something though. I have no transportation and it is so expensive to do my laundry since I have no wash machine. I forgot how much of a luxury a washer was to me. I guess it takes something like this to show us how much we take for granted in our everday lives. If anyone can help please email me at maidennanny@yahoo.com. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for this site and everything ya’ll have done for us who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Ya’ll are in our prayers as well as those who have stayed back home to try to rebuild their lives.

For anyone seeking assistance with resume writing, here are a few helpful tips for writing a chronological, functional or summary resume. A chronological resume is used when your work history has been steady without a lot of interruptions, and also includes education and skills. It reads like a job application and provides a prospective employer with monthly/yearly dates of employment, names of past employers and descriptions of duties for these employers from the past ten years with the most recent date first. The Pennsylvania Career Link website gives you capabilities for building a chronological resume to be viewed by prospective employers. A functional resume is used when you wish to emphasize your abilities more than your stability and provides headings of specific areas of specialization, such as Sales Associates, and then a list of employers from which you have acquired such a talent. It follows with past education and skills similar to that of a chronological resume. The summary resume is used to emphasize your knowledge of a particular field and then provides a list of your accomplishments within this field. For example, Manager of a Computer Distribution Service for four years, with a $30,000 yearly budget and serving the needs of clients from the United States and other countries. *Negotiated the purchase of inventory; *Provided inventory control; *Managed bookeeping; and *Provided all clerical office functions.

  55. 55 Gina Surridge (contact me!)

We are in need of someone in the Pittsburgh area willing to offer automotive/electricalal services at a reasonable or reduced price. We have recently purchased a very basic motorhome that our family of 4 plans to drive back home to New Orleans and use as temporary housing until we are able to re-establish permanant housing as our previous home there was demolished in Katrina.

Right after buying the motorhome we turned on the generator and apparently blew a fuse or something similar and now the inside lights and electrical is not working. We are trying to get it road ready by June 8th, as we HAVE to be back home to New Orleans by the 15th to deal with some obligations. Since this will be our only home after that date having the electrical work is critical.

While our budget is tight, we are more than willing to pay a fair price to have it fixed. If you or someone you know could help us out please email me ASAP.

    Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!

    Reflections and Renewal
We are in the process of updating the web site for the Project Katrina Crisis Counseling Outreach Project. This site is a vaulable resource for persons who have migrated to W. Pa. It is also an important resource for those individuals who have reached out to help the survivors (family members, friends, volunteers, and professionals). At this phase of the web construction we would like to personalize the page to include your personal photgraphs, art, stories, poems, music, and reactions to the storm(s). We are also interested in posting pre-storm photos of the area.
If you, or someone you know, (adults and children) would like to post your impressions on the web site please forward them to our e-mail address: ProjectKatrina@ccrinfo.org. It is important that you include a statement of permission and your contact information. It is our belief that through this medium the healing will continue.
    Take care,

  60. 60 Dianna Adams (contact me!)

Hi! My name is Dianna Adams and I have two boys (Kedarrius, 7 and Joseph Jr., 7 month
I live in Gretna, Louisiana on the Westbank of New Orleans in Jefferson Parish. When
Hurricane Katrina came and we were asked to evacuate my family and I traveled all
over from Mississippi to Alabama to Atlanta Georgia and back here in New Orleans.
We lost alot but were greatful to be alive. At that time I was 7 months pregnant
and was hospitalized in almost 6 different hospitals in each location. I was under
a tremendous amount of stress and almost lost my child. I already have heart trouble and suffer with depression and I’m bipolar. At 24 years old that alot to have
medically wrong even though there’s alot more health issues. I am not able to work because of my health problems but I try to work through temporary agencies just to provide for my kids and pay the bills. For the last 2 years I’ve been in this program that only provide assistance for the mentally disabled until they can rehabilitate themselves to become independent. So far I have not been able to reach that point. I need a tremendous amount of assistance with the following:

shoes, clothes, finances, better housing, repair work to my convertible, child care assistance, finding a job, receiving my disability, and other things too.
Due to everyone gouging on the rent down here I haven’t been able to find better housing for my kids and I. There’s so much needed to be done and I feel as though I
am helpless when I know I’m not. I am currently receiving treatment at the mental health clinic for the past 5 years. I also would like to get my 7 year old involved in some type of program to help with his behavior and discipline because he is getting into alot of trouble at home and school and I need help because I’ve done everything I know how. If anyone can give me feedback feel free anytime I appreciate it.

  61. 61 Pamela Hill (contact me!)

Hello. My name is Pam and my family relocated to the Pittsburgh area after Katrina flooded our home in D’Iberville, MS. First, I would like to express my thanks to all the wonderful people of the Pittsburgh area who have helped us. There have been many, and we have been blessed to know each and every one of you. God bless you all for all you have done. We lost all in the storm, including our home, everything in it, our most reliable vehicle, my husband’s job, everything. While we are slowly getting back on our feet, there are still things we need and have not been able to replace. Some furnishings, household goods, linens and such. At the moment, we are surviving on basic necessities, but we are surviving, so I am grateful. While donations of these things would be greatly appreciated and helpful, that is not my main reason for posting this. My four year old son has developmental problems that we were dealing with before the storm that have been made more difficult now that we have no health insurance and a much smaller income than before. I am looking for any programs that will help with getting him back in speech therapy and developmental therapy. My hope is that I will be able to get him approved for C.H.I.P.S. health coverage, but as yet I have not got a reply on the application I sent in. I would also like to put him in a qualified day care. The doctor back home had me do this and he was beginning to show great improvements with how he talks and interacts with others. The problem is that with our limited income and with needing to replace so much that we have lost, we can’t affort the cost. I have a lot of health problems myself and so my husband is the only one who works. I have found a wonderful daycare close to where we live that has great programs, a speech therapist that comes to the daycare, and a nurse, who’s own autistic daughter goes there, who is trained to deal with autistic children (my son has not been evaluated as of yet, but his doctor back home wanted him to be, for autism) but we simply can’t affort it, the cost is $125.00 per week. He loved going to his daycare back home. He says it is going to see his friends. (smile). His communication skills are improving daily, but he is still so very far behind most children his age. Because he can’t communicate sometimes what he wants or needs, he can be prone to fits of frustration with screaming and such. He will be old enough to start school soon, but is far from being ready. He is a very bright and intelligent, loving child, I just need help to get him started back on the right path. Any help or suggestions anyone can offer on helping him, please email me directly at hill1811@comcast.net. Also, I am supposed to have medical test and procedures done yearly to monitor the development of and remove pre-cancerous colon polyps, as well as regular medical care for other chronic health problems. I am overdue for all of this and until I can rectify our insurance problems, I am unable to take care of this. If anyone knows of health care assistance for adults or families that could help, I would appreciate that information as well. Thank you all again for all you do for those of us hurt by Katrina and other disasters. Without people like you, caring for those who can’t do for themselves for a time, the light of kindness that lives in all our hearts could never shine through to light the way for those lost in the darkness. God bless you all again for all you have already done and continue to do.
